Plant Ecophysiology & AI: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on AI-enabled plant ecophysiology to improve mechanistic understanding and predictions of ecosystem responses to environmental change. This position resides in the Ecosystem Processes Group in the Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The selected candidate will work with Dr. Jeffrey Warren and Dr. Lianhong Gu and collaborate with researchers in the ORNL Terrestrial Ecosystem Science (TES) Scientific Focus Area (SFA) to integrate experimental measurements and trait databases to assess ecosystem response to environmental forcing. The primary research focus is AI-forward, experiment-driven. This position encourages leveraging AI/ML methods to assess plant physiological responses to current or imposed environmental conditions. Research may leverage: - Laboratory, growth chamber and field experimental data, and/or new measurements to quantify molecular to ecosystem scale responses to warming, drought, and elevated CO2 (e.g., gas exchange, fluorescence, hydraulics, respiration, water potential, thermal tolerance) - Trait synthesis at scale (e.g., using trait databases TRY, FRED, LeafWeb, Sapfluxnet, PSInet) to translate trait variation into model parameter priors and functional constraints, and to explore parameter relationships with environmental conditions - Hybrid modeling that combines mechanistic ecophysiology with AI, such as: - - Physics-informed machine learning and neutral networks to investigate plant physiological / abiotic relationships - - Bayesian statistics and neural and Gaussian-process emulators for accelerating parameter estimation and uncertainty propagation - - Selective cross-scale evaluation using complementary ecosystem observations (e.g., experiments) to test how AI-informed analyses can contribute to ecosystem-scale simulations. Ecophysiology of Marine Arctic Phytoplankton: A postdoctoral position is available to study the ecophysiology of marine Arctic phytoplankton at the University of Connecticut. Work is based in the Kremer lab (UConn Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, EEB), supported by a new NSF award to Drs. Colin Kremer, Louise Lewis (UConn), and Atsushi Matsuoka (UNH). The successful candidate will collaborate with PIs to: - Identify and work with a unique collection of 140+ live cultures (mostly diatoms) from the Western Arctic Ocean, using molecular methods and metabarcoding - Experimentally quantify growth and physiological responses of representative Arctic and sub-Arctic species to combinations of temperature, light, and photoperiod - Contribute to the development and testing of mechanistic, ecophysiological models to predict species responses to multiple environmental drivers. Macroecology - Shared Planet Group: The Shared Planet Group led by Dr. Alex Jensen and based at Texas State University (San Marcos, TX – in person work expected) is recruiting a postdoc to start early 2027. This postdoc will be expected to primarily work on questions that are aligned with existing macroecological themes within the Group, such as range dynamics, citizen science, and applied computer vision. Salary: $60k/year + benefits (2 years of funding available via startup funds). This postdoc is funded by Alex’s startup, meaning the questions we work on together are fairly open ended. With that said, the postdoc would be expected to start their time by leading 1-2 partially completed projects through to publication (as lead author). These projects are diverse in theme and scope and include: 1) how buildings shape urban biodiversity using iNaturalist data; 2) capturing range contractions and observer effort with iNaturalist data; 3) familiarity and attitudes towards non-native species in the southeastern United States; and 4) how North American professional sports teams contribute to environmental initiatives. Freshwater Ecology and Climate Change: Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. We seek a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher who has a strong background in natural sciences including freshwater sciences. The main responsibility of the postdoctoral fellow is to synthesise knowledge related to the three main project questions. Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology: The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies invites applications for a postdoctoral associate to collaborate on a new four-year NSF-funded project that seeks to characterize patterns of ecosystem metabolism in lake ecosystems and to explain how and why they vary through time and around the world. The GLAMR project is assembling a global database of ecosystem metabolism and related data spanning hundreds of lakes and hundreds of thousands of lake-days, and the postdoc’s primary role will be to conduct synthesis analyses using that database. Quantitative Aquatic Ecology: A 1.5-year Postdoctoral Researcher position is available working with Drs. Latimore and Cheruvelil in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University. The successful candidate will join the Bridge Lab to conduct data-intensive and collaborative lake and stream ecology research and translate results into action in partnership with communities. Ecology and Quantitative Environmental Science: The Rohr Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position in ecology and quantitative environmental science. We seek creative, highly motivated scientists interested in addressing fundamental and applied questions in ecology through interdisciplinary research. Current research areas include disease ecology, climate and environmental change, planetary health, biodiversity, remote sensing, ecological forecasting, artificial intelligence, and quantitative ecology. Quantitative Climate Change Ecology: The Global Change Macroecology lab in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ is recruiting a 2-yr postdoc to start in October-November 2026 (January 2027 latest) and a PhD student to start Fall 2027. Postdoc - The postdoc will work with big data (e.g. GBIF, eBird, Movebank), remote sensing products, GIS tools and quantitative/spatial approaches including machine learning to explore how and why wildlife species are affected by climate change at continental scales. There is flexibility in project ideas, but several possible themes include range shift projections, regional variation in environmental drivers of distributions within species, estimating trends and drivers of environmental niche loss, or exploring animal movement following disturbance. Work with birds is preferred for certain projects but other terrestrial taxa can certainly be considered. Applicant must be a strong writer and quantitatively skilled with experience in spatial modelling, using GIS tools and using statistical software (ideally R). Statistical Ecology: The Statistical Ecology and Forest Science Lab led by Jeff Doser in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Statistical Ecology Software Development. The position is part of an NSF-funded project to advance software capacity for the statistical analysis of AI-processed ecological data from automated sensors (e.g., camera traps, acoustic recording units). The researcher will work with Jeff Doser and Krishna Pacifici at NC State and Ken Kellner at Michigan State University to develop new modeling functionality in the Ecoverse collection of R packages (unmarked, spOccupancy, spAbundance) including state-of-the-art false positive occupancy/abundance models, coupled-classification models, and continuous time occupancy models. We are seeking a candidate with a PhD in quantitative/statistical ecology, statistics, or a related field. Visiting Assistant Professor in Ecology/Evolutionary Biology: The Middlebury College Biology Department invites applicants for a full-time temporary (3-year) leave-replacement appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology. Modeling Plant Responses to Environmental Variation: The Yoder Lab at California State University Northridge invites applicants for the role of postdoctoral research fellow. The successful applicant will take a collaborating role in a new NSF-funded project in ecological data science, refining and applying an analysis pipeline, TARDIS, to study plant populations' responses to environmental variation over space and time. Insect Movement Ecology: A postdoctoral researcher position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Tania Kim in the Department of Entomology at Kansas State University. Evolutionary Theory on Plasticity, Fish: Professor Suzanne Alonzo, in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Evolutionary Theory on Plasticity. The Postdoctoral Scholar will develop evolutionary theory on transgenerational and phenotypic plasticity in response to parental cues, collaborate with empiricists testing the theory’s predictions in the threespine stickleback, and train undergraduate researchers involved in these projects. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in evolution, animal behavior, or a related field and prior experience with mathematical modeling or related quantitative methods. Seagrass Community Ecology, Resilience, and Ecological Forecasting: The Coastal Plant Ecology Lab at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to investigate long-term changes in seagrass and benthic macrophyte communities in Florida Bay in collaboration with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Fisheries Habitat Assessment Program (FHAP). This position provides a unique opportunity to work with one of the longest-running seagrass monitoring programs in North America, leveraging more than 30 years of ecological monitoring data to address questions in community ecology, ecosystem resilience, climate change, ecological forecasting, and ecosystem restoration. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists and resource managers to develop research that directly informs Everglades restoration and coastal ecosystem management.
